She Freak (1967)
"She Freak" is a fascinating piece of exploitation cinema that reimagines Tod Browning’s 1932 classic Freaks for a new era. Directed by Byron Mabe and produced by David F. Friedman, the film blends elements of horror, drama, and carnival life into a gritty, low-budget spectacle that captures the atmosphere of traveling sideshows.
At its core, She Freak is a cautionary tale about ambition, deception, and the consequences of greed. The protagonist, Jade Cochran, is a dissatisfied waitress who sees the carnival as her ticket to a better life. However, her manipulative nature and disregard for the people around her set her on a path toward an inevitable downfall. The film’s narrative unfolds with a slow burn, immersing the audience in the day-to-day operations of the carnival before delivering its shocking climax.
One of the film’s most striking aspects is its authentic depiction of carnival culture. Shot at real fairs, She Freak features extensive footage of carnival setups, performances, and behind-the-scenes interactions. While this adds a layer of realism, it also results in pacing issues, with long sequences that feel more like documentary material than narrative progression.
The performances are a mixed bag, with Claire Brennen delivering a compelling portrayal of Jade’s transformation from an ambitious outsider to a ruthless opportunist. Bill McKinney, in an early role, plays the carnival owner with surprising depth, while Felix Silla, known for his work in The Addams Family, adds an intriguing presence.
Despite its flaws—such as uneven pacing, static cinematography, and occasionally stilted dialogue—She Freak remains an interesting artifact of 1960s exploitation cinema. It lacks the raw emotional power of Freaks, but its colorful visuals and immersive carnival setting make it a unique entry in the genre. For fans of cult films and vintage horror, She Freak offers a glimpse into a bygone era of filmmaking, where low-budget productions thrived on shock value and unconventional storytelling.
